Cherry Hill goes hybrid

A state-funded program is helping Cherry Hill turn in its fleet of 1990s-era gas guzzlers for new fuel-efficient vehicles.

The township will receive a $4,000 state rebate for each of three 2010 Ford Escape hybrids it buys.

The new SUVs, which get 34 miles per gallon in city driving, will replace a pair of 12-mpg Ford Broncos, made in 1995 and 1996, and a 15-mpg 1999 Ford Explorer.

Officials expect to save $15,000 to $25,000 in fuel costs with the new vehicles.

The aid is being provided by the state's Alternative Fuel Vehicle Rebate Program.

Mayor Bernie Platt hailed the township's first-ever purchase of hybrid vehicles as part of its "common sense, environmentally friendly initiatives." Cherry Hill's Public Works Department is expected to switch its 40-vehicle fleet from gas to B20 biodiesel by the end of this month as part of a state program.
