The proposed fiscal 2009-10 budget turned over to Cherry Hill's town council last night aims to cut the municipal tax rate by 4 percent, according to the mayor's office.
In June, the township laid off 13 of its 340 nonunion workers to save about $800,000. Mayor Bernie Platt cited those layoffs, along with consolidating departments and freezing cost-of-living increases for noncontractual employees, among a dozen reasons for his proposal to lower the tax rate.
Last year, the township raised taxes by 17 percent. Last night, Platt told residents the proposed 4 percent drop is an attempt to "lessen the financial load on them during these dark times."
The full budget is not yet available and details have to be worked out, chief of staff Dan Keashen said. Council will review the mayor's proposal before coming up with a final product to vote on before a public hearing in mid-November.
